Make a Face à la Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso loved to show faces from different viewpoints all at once. Let your imagination run wild as you create your own Picasso-inspired portrait!

Hattie B. Dale's black-and-white rendering of a cardboard face

What's in Your Kit?

  • Assorted cardboard shapes, including a face

  • Chalk

  • Glue

  • Instructions and creative tips

You May Also Want:

  • A work surface to protect your table

  • Your imagination!

Directions

  1. Arrange the cardboard pieces to create a face. It can look like you, someone you know, or a completely silly and imaginative face!

  2. Move the pieces around until you are happy with your design.

  3. Stack and overlap pieces to create layers and make your face more three-dimensional.

  4. Add color with chalk. You can color the cardboard pieces before or after arranging them.

  5. Once you are satisfied with your creation, glue the pieces in place.

Tips

  • Peel away a layer of cardboard to reveal the corrugated texture underneath.

  • Use just two colors for a bold, graphic look, or use every color in the chalk box!

  • Try placing eyes, noses, and mouths in unexpected places, just as Picasso often did.

  • There is no right or wrong way to create your face—have fun experimenting!

We'd love to see what you create. Take a picture of your Picasso-inspired face and send it to Frame Gallery. Your artwork may be featured in our online gallery!
